Was Jesus Trans? A Thought-Provoking Reflection on Gender, Inclusion, and Faith

Was Jesus trans? According to science, maybe. According to love, who cares?

Let’s look at it from a biological standpoint. Jesus didn’t have a biological father. If we take the virgin birth story at face value, that would mean Jesus didn’t receive a Y chromosome. Genetically, he would’ve had XX chromosomes—making him, by scientific standards, female at birth. And yet, he lived, dressed, and was seen as a man. If we applied today’s language and understanding, that could make Jesus a trans man.

As I like to put it:

Jesus was trans,

This I know,

With no bio daddy-o.

His gender doesn’t match his sex,

His chromosomes are X and X.

But here’s the bigger point: it shouldn’t matter.

If the suggestion that Jesus could have been trans makes you feel uneasy or even outraged, it might be time to revisit what he stood for—love, compassion, and radical inclusion. Would it be offensive if Jesus were disabled? Or neurodivergent? Or a redhead? No. So if Jesus being trans feels blasphemous to you, ask yourself why. Maybe it’s not about Jesus at all. Maybe it’s about how you view trans people.

So instead of gatekeeping who Jesus was, let’s focus on what he taught: love your neighbour. No conditions. No disclaimers. Just love.
